Non-food musings

When Melissa and Leslie were here for Thanksgiving 2010, we made a short trip up to Hyde Park and visited the home of Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt.  A few days later, we visited the new FDR Memorial in Washington, DC, and I started reading a biography of this great President.  His words as displayed at the Memorial and as captured in the biography seem especially fitting for our great country at this time.  I look forward to learning more about him and his leadership during very troubled times, and I am moved to share some of his words here.

"The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much it is whether we provide enough for those who have little."

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."

"True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made."

"Be sincere.  Be brief.  Be seated."
